Nei sedimenti recuperati dal fondale marino antartico, a circa 1.000 metri di profondit\u00e0, i ricercatori hanno trovato frammenti di ambra, resina fossile prodotta da antichissimi alberi risalenti al Cretaceo medio. \u00c8 la prima volta che l'ambra viene recuperata al Polo Sud. In Antartide tra i 90 e gli 80 milioni di anni fa il clima era caldo e umido e c'erano foreste paludose di conifere simili a quelle neozelandesi.
